This week’s Echoes of the past looks at the September 20 edition of Optician from 1974. Around the time the issue went to press, BBC began its Ceefax information service, which ceased broadcasting in 2012 after 38 years.

Echoes of the Past: Women's eyewear reviewed

A frame review from the issue caught Optician’s eye as it was searching through the archive. Reviews of optometric practice equipment have always been a regular fixture in Optician, but hands-on reviews of fashion frames are rare.

The Robin’s choice article looked at new women’s ophthalmic frames from Birch-Stigmant, Optyl Eyewear and Silhouette – doing so with a rather dry sense of humour. ‘Having seen what is offered this month, I am tempted to ask whatever happened to good taste,’ said Robin.
