Essilor symposium: Driving the agenda

Bill Harvey reports from a particularly lively meeting of academics

Essilor has been organising an annual meeting of academics and lecturers from all the major institutions teaching optics for decades, and over the years they have developed a reputation for both good quality presentations and healthy, sometimes heated, debate. This year proved no exception and, by introducing a more informal discussion-based agenda, event organiser and Essilor professional relations manager Andy Hepworth provided the perfect platform for attendees to offer their sometimes opposing views on matters such as blue light hazards, provision of reading additions for pre-presbyopes and the future of education. Many of these topics continue to be well covered in the pages of this publication elsewhere, so for this review I will discuss two subject areas about which there were excellent presentations and some useful debate.
