It's not every day that optometrists arrive at work by dugout canoe. However, in my recent outreach trip in rural Guyana this was the preferred method of transport.

In more conventional style I graduated in optometry from the University of Bradford in 2006, having previously worked as a dispensing optician. After practising as an optometrist for a couple of years in the UK I became interested in voluntary work in developing countries. I contacted Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO) and was offered a position as an optometrist in Guyana.
