With a new catwalk, fashion frames were at the forefront of a rejuvenated Optrafair. Optician looks at the highlights

JF Rey

On the stand of its UK distribution partner Mac Agencies/Pure Eyewear was JF Rey’s new releases in its Petite collection – designed for female patients with small faces.

The luxury collection has not lost sight of the creative spirit that makes the JF Rey brand so iconic and the new styles have been designed in metal, acetate and material combinations.

The gentle mottled brown, purple and green hues of the PA0407 style (1, above) match the soft take on the panto silhouette, which is mated to polished gold temples using wraparound temple lugs.

The Carbon Wood (below) collection was also on show, with its expertly laminated layers of carbon fibre weaves and thin veneers of wood.

Galaxy Optical

More than 300 new ophthalmic frames and sunglasses were launched by Galaxy at this year’s event. The company announced its support for the Pink Ribbon Foundation with its new collection of ophthalmic frames for the breast cancer charity.

The 36 new frames in the Pink Ribbon Foundation range (above) are for women and feature clean lines in a variety of shapes to suit all faces. ‘We received a very positive reaction and awareness of the charity was extremely high among visitors to the show,’ said Galaxy Optical operations director, Sergio Weingarten. ‘They thought the concept of a donation being made with every frame sale was a great initiative and something that would appeal to consumers and the trade alike,’ he added.

Reykjavik Eyes

Optoplast Actman Eyewear premiered the latest collections from Reykjavik Eyes Black Label. The Iceland-designed collection is primarily constructed from lightweight and hypoallergenic beta titanium in Italy, but there are also a number of acetate and titanium styles in the range.

The new 18-strong collection includes a number of new silhouettes and a series of updated colour schemes. The masculine Fulla frame (above) is a large round eye style that has been updated with a modern looking double nose bridge and contrasting colour internals.

Staying with the round eye theme, Bragi’s (above) silhouette has been tweaked slightly to heighten its femininity, which is further helped by a new blue and beige combination colour scheme.

Dunelm Optical

Busby 1 (below) from Lyle & Scott collection was one of the highlights on Dunelm’s stand. The new style balances retro sensibilities with new production techniques and comes with cool clip-on polarised lenses.

Made from Mazzucchelli acetate, the style features a raised 3D Golden Eagle Lyle & Scott logo on each side, diamond pin details and key hole bridge. The clip-on frame changes the look of the frame, with a retro style double nose bridge.

The model is available in polished mixed Brilliant Brown, mixed Military Green and transparent Tangy Terracotta – with a free case and glazing on offer when ordering an Rx.

Bondeye Optical

Optician Award winning supplier Bondeye Optical used Optrafair to debut the Roav range of foldable sunglass styles and ophthalmic frames, which the company says are the world’s thinnest folding frames.

At just 8mm thick when folded, the US-made frames are constructed from stainless steel and feature a patented screw-less hinge design.

The Roav brand was created in Los Angeles by a team of engineers, designers and travellers who crowdfunded the project to make a pair of sunglasses that could always be kept with you.

Sunglass models come with mirrored and graduated lens offers and are said to offer 100% UV protection. Frames come with a slim branded case.

Ovvo Optics

The frames from Ovvo Optics may have escaped Optician’s attention had it not spotted, on its stand, a 20kg weight suspended from one of its frames.

Sheet metal frames with screw-less hinges do not always have a feeling of robustness, but the same cannot be said for Ovvo’s styles, which are laser cut from a composite of surgical grade stainless-steel and titanium.

The hinges can withstand 90lb of pulling force and have been tested to over 300,000 cycles, approximately 205 years of use. The hinges can also be easily re-tensioned if required. The company also offers a wood and carbon fibre collection, with an acetate and metal collection.

Optical Service

Proving popular on the Optical Service stand was the new Synergy collection. Targeting both male and females in the young adult fashion market, each frame in the 12-strong collection is available in two fresh colour schemes.

Pictured from the new range is Syn-6001, a contemporary rectangular style that has been brought to life with a vivid purple colour scheme. An additional 12 styles will be launched in July and Optical Service can provide a full package of POS and marketing materials

International Eyewear

Celebrating its 30th anniversary at the event was International Eyewear. A special selection of frames within the Episode collection have been inspired by long-standing members of staff, including Episode 250 1988 model for one of the company’s sales team members, Michelle.

The soft oval frame features cutaway lamination that exposes marble hues around the temple joints. A distinctive 88-foil tip on the inside right temple adds visual detail. The frame is available in a versatile eye size of 50-16-135, and colour options of purple and petrol.

Eyespace

eyespace.co.uk

Among a slew of new releases from Eyespace were two standout frames in the Land Rover and Cocoa Mint collections. The Fenton frame (pictured below) is an exercise in discretion, with cool micro-branding evident throughout.

The Wayfarer-inspired silhouette features wraparound trim on the temple joints and top-mounted details on the temples. The company’s Cocoa Mint collection has always focused on elegant and stylish, easy to wear shapes, so the CM9940 ophthalmic frame (pictured below) feels like a bit of a departure.

The elegance and the style remain, but the new frame has been injected with the spirit of Scandinavia. The minimalist aviator profile included flat metal construction and contrasting matte hues.
