The conference was an extremely important forum to direct efforts and galvanise strategies towards the elimination of uncorrected refractive error as a cause of avoidable visual impairment. Uncorrected refractive error is the world's leading cause of avoidable visual impairment there are an estimated 153 million uncorrected myopes, hypermetropes and astigmats. Uncorrected presbyopia also causes near vision impairment for 517 million people.
