Simon Jones dusts off his crystal ball to predict the future of eyewear

This would have been a much easier feature to write this time last year. There have been several milestone events in the past 20 years that have steered the direction of the frame sector, but the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic right at the end of the two-decade period is highly likely to be the most significant.

Like petrol poured on a fire, the coronavirus pandemic will accelerate many of the changes already happening in trends, manufacturing developments and evolution of the retail sector. The next five to 10 years are likely to be as eventful as the past two decades.

As the world was told to stay indoors, consumers of all ages broadened their online activity. Zoom and MS Teams calls became the norm and remote technology was used by optical practices all over the UK. The closure of non-essential retail meant consumers simply had to make the move online and it is hard to bet against online retail having a greater impact on the way consumers purchase eyewear in the future.
