Wolds Optical is an independent prescription house in the market town of Driffield, East Yorkshire that was set up in 1995 by owner Malcolm Hodgson. Prior to this he spent 29 years as a lens surface manager with Vertex Optical, one of the largest optical companies of its time, which manufactured acetate frames as well as offering surfacing and glazing.
'After I left school at 17,' says Hodgson, 'I started in optics as a trainee in the surfacing department and was managing by the time I was 19. I always enjoyed it, but towards the end of my time at Vertex I was mainly out on the road doing sales and marketing. Having gained experience of both the technical and commercial sides of the business gave me the confidence to start up my own.'
