My grandfather, the late JL Saks, was one such example who went on to study optometry. After losing a case 'Rex vs Saks' for 'performing acts pertaining to a medical practitioner' - having the gall to charge a professional fee - he appealed and won. He thus established optometry as a valid profession and is regarded as the father of professional optometry in South Africa.

Today few would question the right to charge a fee. However, almost 100 years down the track we seem to have gone full circle with some chain store eye care groups offering 'free eye tests'.
