In the latest of our series on developments in local optometric care, Optician asks about the newest scheme in Croydon, Surrey

What is the nature of the proposed project (training, changes in practice, referral refinement, etc)?
CORS (Croydon Optometric Referral Scheme) aims to manage and refine all non-emergency eye referrals. Onward referrals into secondary care will be according to protocols that have been agreed with the consultants. Exclusions are patients suffering sudden loss of vision, patients with acute eye pain, patients with obvious penetrating injury or chemical injury. GPs are asked to refer all other eye conditions to a participating optometrist. Patients can also self-refer.

How many optometrists/practitioners are involved in the scheme?
Eighteen practitioners over eight practices, but this is increasing as more sign up.
