Dr Alise Kalteniece and Professor Clare O’Donnell report from the Optegra Eye Health Care & Zeiss Symposium

The fifth annual Optegra Eye Sciences & Zeiss symposium, entitled Hands-on with latest innovations in ophthalmology, took place at Conference Aston, Aston University in Birmingham.

This event brought together a diverse group of eye care professionals, including healthcare technicians, optometrists, ophthalmic nurses and surgeons from the UK and Europe. With 150 people registered for the event, the symposium provided an opportunity for professionals to enhance their skillsets.

Consultant ophthalmologist Shafiq Rehman gave a presentation on advances in cataract and refractive surgery where he shared the latest surgical techniques and innovations.

Rehman reviewed innovations in intraocular lens (IOL) technology including enhanced monofocal and extended depth of focus (EDOF) IOLs. He showed that some of the newer EDOF IOL offerings are delivering excellent distance, intermediate and near vision with minimal unwanted side effects in terms of dysphotopsia.
