Headaches in optometric practice part 4 - sinus headaches and sinusitis

Kirit Patel describes two cases of headaches with facial involvement, each relating to the sinuses, but of very different aetiology

Case 1: Inverted papilloma of the maxillary sinus

A 68 year old male diabetic patient had been suffering headaches for more than three years. The dull, niggling headaches were over the left cheek and around the front of the head generally. He had tried various painkillers to no avail. He was also under the care of his general practitioner for slight problems with breathing, particularly through the left nostril. He had been given various nasal sprays as his practitioner had thought he was suffering from nasal congestion or sinusitis. The most recently prescribed nasal spray was the corticosteroid beconase and this was also proving ineffective.
