Hoya EyeGenius: Beyond fixation disparity

Bill Harvey discovers the new Hoya EyeGenius does far more than first meets the eye

We recently published a paper looking at a new method of assessing fixation disparity using the Hoya EyeGenius (Optician 17.02.17) and I have arranged a trial of the binocular vision assessment system later in the spring.

While organising this, I have discovered that the EyeGenius is complete and comprehensive electronic display system, and much more than just a fixation disparity unit.

The unit

The unit comprises a distance target screen (either standalone or wall mounted – figure 1), a near target screen and a tablet (figure 2).

A further adaptation is possible to test the impact of glare on distance vision. The Light Kit consists of two light sources that are attached to either side of the distance display screen (figure 3) and help assess the impact of extraneous light sources upon distance acuity. This is a legally required measurement for drivers in some European countries.
