Leightons Opticians and Hearing Care has followed in the footsteps of maverick rock band Radiohead by inviting patients to pay whatever they think an eye exam is worth.
Leightons’ Pay What You Want campaign encouraged patients to upgrade to its ‘ultimate eye exam’ including the use of latest technology to check for cataracts, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, diabetes and high blood pressure.
As an upgrade from the basic eye test, patients at nine practices were invited to name their price for its ultimate eye exam, which normally costs £69.
It was found that patients opted to pay an average of £56 per exam, but fewer than expected upgraded from the basic NHS sight test.
