
A vote of no confidence in the General Optical Council’s (GOC) ability to protect the public has been called for in an online petition.
The petition, which was started by the Ophthalmic Practitioners’ Group (OPG), had 520 signatures as Optician went to press.
Among the OPG’s claims was that the GOC had failed in its overarching objective to protect the public and that it had not listened to stakeholders. It also said the GOC would ‘fail to maintain standards for education if left to their own devices.’
It added that the GOC had feigned responsibility for its failures and that the regulator had a history of ignoring the advice of others.
