A share of NHS Scotland funding of £100,000 has been made available to companies who can develop and roll out remote vision testing. Simon Jones reports

Phase one of a technology and innovation competition run by the Small Business Research Initiative (SBRI) looking to address lack of access to remote vision testing and monitoring in Scotland draws to a close later this month.

Details outlined within SBRI’s summary of instructions on how to enter the competition suggested that while the benefits of managing eye conditions in the community were well documented, there were disparities in the overall uptake of eye testing. The SBRI said some people in disadvantaged communities and minority groups did not access as easily as others did.

In the first phase, applicants were asked to present solutions that allow patients to have their vision tested in a range of different settings and to specific criteria set out by NHS Scotland. Progression to second phase of the project will depend on the submissions from the initial phase. Up to four projects will receive a share of the £100,000 funding pot for initial research and development should the competition move to phase two, with additional funding after for prototype development. Successful applicants would also have access to advice from NHS Forth Valley, NHS Ayrshire and Arran, NHS Fife and NHS Grampian.
