
A screening and referral system on a smartphone has almost tripled the number of people presenting with eye problems during a study in Kenya, according to findings published in The Lancet Digital Health.
The system increased attendances in primary care as well as appropriate uptake of hospital services when compared to the standard approach.
A randomised controlled trial included more than 128,000 people in Trans Nzoia County, Kenya and analysed the potential of mobile health tools to improve access to eye care.
It looked at whether the Peek Community Eye Health (Peek CEH) system could help target limited eye health resources and manage more patients effectively in primary care.
