Instruments: OCT angiography in practice - part one

Instruments
In the first of two features, Kirit Patel shows how OCT angiography can help in the management of a variety of conditions that may present in primary care practice

I have been using the AngioVue OCT (distributed by Haag Streit UK) for over a year and would like to run through the cases that I have encountered in practice. Fluorescein angiography is an invasive procedure firmly in the domain of ophthalmology and it was always difficult for us optometrists to have access to fluorescein angiography images and in turn unable to understand the intricacies of non-perfusion and leakage. Optovue pioneered the SSADA algorithm to allow the non-invasive assessment of retinal blood flow at four levels – superficial retina, deep retina, outer retina and choriocapillaris. Non-perfusion due to ischaemia will appear as dark areas and now we are also able to see dot haemorrhages and micro aneurysms as distinct features.
