Italy advances optometry training with Milano-Bicocca Master's

Dr Fabrizio Zeri discusses the launch of the new Master’s degree in optometry and vision science in Italy

In a significant development for optometric education, Italy’s first Master’s degree in optometry and vision science began in October, 2024, at the University of Milano-Bicocca, in Milan, Italy. This new postgraduate course represents a leap forward in optometry training within Italy, aiming to align with the standards of more established programs in Europe and across the globe.

Twenty-three years after establishing Italy’s first bachelor’s degree in optics and optometry, which has since produced thousands of graduates across nine state universities, the Master’s degree in optometry and vision science at Milano-Bicocca marks a new era of advanced education in this field.

Structure and Curriculum

The program is designed to provide students with a deep understanding of advanced clinical practices and cutting-edge technologies in optometry and vision science.

The curriculum offers two main focuses: one on clinical optometry and patient care, including areas such as paediatric and geriatric optometry, low vision and specialty contact lenses; and another emphasising technology and innovation in the field, covering topics like optical imaging, adaptive optics and virtual/augmented reality in optometry.

The standard programme lasts two years, but for interested students, there is also a part-time course option that lasts four years instead of two. The program incorporates a hybrid learning of in-person and online lectures, offering a flexible structure suited not only for working professionals but also for students who cannot relocate to Milan full-time.

While the core theoretical courses are available online, the laboratory activities – essential for hands-on training – are condensed into specific weeks. Such an approach allows students to limit travel to Milan during these intensive sessions only, making the programme accessible to international students or those balancing work and study commitments.

International Perspective

Taught entirely in English, the programme at Milano-Bicocca is designed to appeal to a global audience. The inclusion of renowned international professors enriches the academic experience, offering students valuable insights and the opportunity to engage with leading experts in the field.

Research and Career Opportunities

A strong emphasis on research ensures that graduates are well-prepared for careers in academia or industry. The Master’s thesis requires students to engage in original research, which can be conducted either in Italy or abroad, through collaborations with international institutions and research centres like the university’s COMiB Research Center. This hands-on research experience is designed to open doors to PhD programs and advanced professional roles in optometry.

Looking Ahead

The Master’s degree is expected to become a key pillar of Italy’s optometric education. Its innovative curriculum, flexible learning model, and international focus provide Italian and international students with the tools needed to excel in both clinical and research settings.
