Lenses: Driving on forward

Yiannis Kotoulas rounds up the industry’s specialist driving lenses

Caledonian Optical: Zone Drive

The Zone Drive lens is a varifocal driving lens designed for optimal vision when driving. According to Caledonian, the Zone Drive lens incorporates a power distribution adapted specifically for vehicle operators and functions under any light conditions to help reduce eye fatigue and improve visual fields of the car dashboard and other road users.

Zone Drive has been developed in Caledonian’s Aberdeen laboratory and is said to offer a wider distance vision of almost 180° alongside a profile that helps to reduce glare from other cars and the effects of night myopia.

Essilor: RoadPilot

RoadPilot lenses from Essilor are said to offer visual comfort for drivers to help enhance their confidence and performance while driving on the road, particularly at night time.

According to Essilor, the RoadPilot lenses provide a wider field of vision that allows drivers to see into the distance and the dashboard.

The company added that the lenses benefit from a driving-specific coating called Crizal Drive, which worked to reduce glare from headlights, streetlights, traffic lights and set surfaces with up to 90% less reflections than a hard coat.

RoadPilot is available as both a single vision and varifocal lens and is included in Essilor’s 2022 Take Two promotion.

  • Hoya: EnRoute

The EnRoute lens helps patients to achieve visual comfort with clear, relaxed vision in all directions and at all distances, according to Hoya.

EnRoute is said to improve clarity and colour perception while driving thanks to enhanced contrast and is available as a single vision or progressive lens.

The company explains that EnRoute progressive lenses incorporate its integrated double surface design for wider visual fields and fast switching between distances. This is alongside the company’s balanced view control, that is said to provide stable image perception in all driving situations.

En Route also provides a glare filter that combines the properties of a high-definition treatment and an anti-reflective coating that is able to cut high-energy visible light from LED and Xenon headlights, streetlights and on-board equipment.

  • Jai Kudo: Drivesense

Jai Kudo’s Drivesense lens is said to provide optimum clarity in all light conditions while driving via a night vision zone designed especially to reduce fatigue when driving at night and combat night myopia.

Drivesense also provides improved visual fields to widen vision and reduce astigmatism alongside what the company calls an ‘almost immediate’ adaption to differing light conditions.

The company adds that both progressive and single vision versions of the lens help to relax car journeys by improving focus inside and outside the vehicle during day and night time.

  • Norville: Freeway

Norville’s driving lens, Freeway, is a progressive driving lens that provides complete visual comfort for long hours at the wheel, according to the company.

The lens has been designed to facilitate 180˚ of lateral gaze and prioritises far vision with reduced astigmatism. The company says the lens also provides an easy transition to intermediate vision for viewing the dashboard.

Norville adds that the Vista-Mesh lens coating can be included with Freeway to provide reduced eye strain from electro-magnetic spectrum afflictions by scattering reflections, sharpened visual contrast and dampened flickers.

  • Rodenstock: Rodenstock Road

The driving lens offered by Rodenstock aims to ensure safety when driving, even in the event of heavy rainfall, fog or snow. Rodenstock Road is said to reduce glare from oncoming headlights and has been designed to meet the needs of motorists under any conditions.

The company adds that Rodenstock Road lenses can be customised for each patient using its DNEye Pro technology, which measures the eye to match a lens to its parameters.

  • Seiko: Seiko Drive

Available in both single vision and progressive lens designs, Seiko Drive lenses are said to be optimised for high quality vision across the lens surface. This supports the lateral vision required while driving.

The progressive lens is designed to maximise intermediate range vision for viewing a vehicle’s controls. Seiko Drive lens can also be supplemented with RoadClearCoat, a lens coating that the company says maximises the light in the visible spectrum at night while also reducing glare and distracting reflections.

  • Lenstec: Exceed Drive

Lenstec says the Exceed Drive driving lens is the ultimate progressive lens solution for presbyopic drivers. It is said to offer exceptional dynamic distance viewing across the lens, which allows wearers to maintain awareness of the road, and compensates for the effects of night myopia.

The rest of the lens in Exceed Drive is optimised to provide clear vision of the driver’s immediate vicinity, including the dashboard and mirrors. The lens is available in all indices and an array of tints. Lenstec recommends combining the product with its Smar.t Drive MAR coating to reduce glare.

  • Transitions: Transitions Drivewear

Transitions Drivewear lenses utilise the company’s photochromic light intelligence and NuPolar polarisation technologies to create a lens that is said to quickly adapts to changing light conditions, even in overcast weather.

The company adds that Transitions Drivewear is the only polarised sun lens for driving, with colour and light adaptation providing glare reduction that allows drivers to focus on a safe driving experience. The lenses are said to block 100% of UV light, providing protection and optimal vision both in and outside the car.

Transitions Drivewear lenses are also available via Younger Optics and Shamir.

  • Zeiss: DriveSafe

Zeiss analysed consumer market research when developing DriveSafe and identified three areas to focus on three areas; poor visibility in low light conditions, glare from oncoming road users and difficulty focusing when switching between the road, mirrors and dashboard.

DriveSafe lenses are said to provide better vision in low light and poor weather conditions and reduce glare, providing drivers with confidence when on the road. The company added that 85% of consumers surveyed agreed they were less concerned about headlight glare at night when using DriveSafe lenses.
