The actual practice of dentists and optometrists are clearly worlds apart, but it is not hard to draw parallels between the two professions. At this stage, however, there are no plans to offer optical professionals similar guidance, although a Department of Health spokesperson said the possibility of producing such guidance has not been ruled out. Generally speaking, however, the spokesperson notes the department 'would regard it as a matter of good practice for healthcare professionals to discuss smoking with their patients if an appropriate opportunity arises'.
