Letter from Surbiton

Alison Ewbank joined Optician 30 years ago. In the week she retires from the journal here are a few recollections from that time

Step 1: Take a manual typewriter and type up a story with carbon paper between each sheet.

Step 2: Hand one copy to the messenger who drives to the Sutton, Surrey office from the printer in Berkshire twice a day.

Step 3: Wait for the messenger to return with a ‘galley’ of the story, cut it out, stick it on the page layout (a piece of translucent paper) with glue, and add corrections.

Step 4: Send the layout to the printer – with artwork (black and white photographs, diagrams etc) enclosed – and await the return of a page proof.

Step 5: Read the page proof, send final corrections to the printer and sign off.
