Optician's Index, a monthly business barometer for independent retail practices and regional chains, quizzes its panel members each year on how they feel about the coming year. Those reporting to be very optimistic about the coming 12 months stood at 30 per cent compared to 24 per cent at this time last year. Those reporting to be somewhat optimistic made up 65 per cent compared to 71 per cent last year with the balance of 5 per cent saying they were not at all optimistic. Confidence levels about business performance is December were also buoyant with 60 per cent saying their business had performed better than December 2013. Just a quarter said they thought business had been worse.
