Look Local heads to the West Yorkshire borough of Kirklees and talks to three Huddersfield practitioners about enhanced services and local market conditions. Saul Sebag reports

According to Angela Stocks, practice manager of Beaumont Opticians, a family independent established in 1901, the optics market in Huddersfield, Kirklees’ largest town, is competitive and is developing a comprehensive range of enhanced services.

Stocks said: ‘Eye care has evolved a great deal in Huddersfield, in that we carry out more clinical evaluations such as cataracts, ocular hypertension and Primary Eyecare Assessment and Referral Service (Pears) direct referrals to the hospital.’

An ambitious Yorkshire community

Huddersfield is the UKs eleventh largest town. It remains a traditional community-minded place, and sport, particularly football and rugby league, remains important to the local identity. The town was the scene of civil unrest during its transformation during the Industrial Revolution away from its roots as a market town with a speciality in textiles.
