It is now more than eight years since the author stood on a podium at the British Contact Lens Association Conference in Birmingham at the launch of PureVision, the UK's first generation silicone hydrogel. This article introduces the latest silicone hydrogel, Menicon PremiO, from the Japanese contact lens giant, as well as providing a situational analysis on the market today.

In the years between that 1999 launch and this year's BCLA meeting, another five SiH contact lenses have been introduced, including the self-declared 'second generation' lenses from Johnson & Johnson Vision Care (Acuvue Advance & Oasys) and Coopervision (Biofinity). The introduction of Menicon PremiO (Figure 1), at this year's event, saw practitioners' choice expand further.
