The lab was set up 44 years ago outside of Durham in Langley Moor, not far from the modern premises in Spennymoor.
'Originally it was a small independent glazing lab,' says Graham Carter, general manager at Dunelm Optical. 'Aside from lenses, cases and accessories were sold too, but there was no frame element to the business at that point.'
In time the business grew and the start-up facilities became too small so the embryonic company moved to a larger second set of premises in Sherburn Hill, on the other side of Durham. After some years there, an extension was added and Dunelm began to offer surfacing services too.
