Cutting edge

The London Eye Hospital currently treats people from all around the world with the latest in refractive surgery techniques. Since Qureshi set up the unit in the early 2000s after moving from Moorfields, the hospital has been proud to offer new treatments as they come to light. All-laser cataract treatments are available using a femtosecond laser device which can undertake cataract liquefaction, capsulorhexis and corneal incisions all safely and with minimal tissue disruption. The hospital has implanted tens of thousands of multifocal intraocular lenses over the years and continues to offer the very latest designs. The trifocal lens, for example, is available and has the advantage of offering clear intermediate as well as distance and near vision with minimal glare and haloes at night. Older generation lenses do not offer this intermediate clarity. The hospital is the only clinic in the UK able to offer the Light Adjustable Lens (LAL) and the Synchrony accommodating lens. When I visited, I met a patient in the waiting room wearing protective spectacles who was about to receive his final treatment having had LAL implants. The lens is positioned in the eye and then a laser is used to create the correct power once the lens is in situ. This ensures the very best visual outcome. The Synchrony lens is an accommodating implant able to offer a degree of presbyopic correction.
