Optical pay has been marking time for some years now but, as a new Optician workplace survey shows, professionals are more interested in where they work than how much they get paid. Chris Bennett reports

Changes in the optical market have highlighted mismatches between the manpower needs of the modern profession and the habits of those qualifying as optometrists and dispensing opticians.

The past few years have seen a rash of new optometry undergraduate courses open up to try to address some of those issues, but in very basic terms there are some areas of the country to which optical staff are unwilling to move.

Bizarrely, these tend to be the nicer areas of the country offering lower house prices, better quality of life and, for optical professionals, higher salaries.

In an effort to shed some light on the topic, Optician conducted a salary and employment survey which looked again at some of the issues raised in a 2012 survey, before a flurry of new university courses.
