These instruments increasingly form part of the eye care practitioner’s armoury of tests with their ability to monitor changes in structure, both anterior and retinal, over time. Recent developments to look out for are the inclusion of angiography functions.

Software is now available for some of the instruments to allow an accurate assessment of the blood flow at both retinal and subretinal level which, without the need for the injection of a dye, can indicate where there is interruption in blood flow (as might occur with an occlusion) or where there is an increase or leakage of blood. Haag Streit UK, Heidelberg Engineering, Topcon and Nidek all have developments in this field.
