Ósiyo – It is going well for optometrists

There is increased interest in the UK among optometrists aiming to add laser techniques to their armoury. To launch a series looking at the training of specialised optometrists in enhanced roles, therapeutic optometrist Andrew Matheson describes a recent course he attended in the US supporting optometrists wanting to embark in eye surgery and laser treatment techniques

I have just returned from the ‘Advanced Procedures’ training and accreditation course that is run by the Northeastern State University (NSU) in Tahlequah, Cherokee Nation, Oklahoma. I have attended many courses and conventions in America and this ranks with the best. I feel, therefore, I just have to share my experience with other therapeutic and glaucoma specialist optometrists in the UK at a time when many may well be aiming to expand their clinical skills to include techniques such as laser and surgical procedures.

The Course

The course has been set up and is run with the aim of educating and then providing accreditation for optometrists looking to expand their therapeutic skills, with a focus on laser and anterior surgical techniques. Key experts in establishing and running the course include Dr Richard Castillo, Dr Nate Lighthizer and Dr Joseph Shetler (see figures 1 to 3).
