Parent and practitioner opinions on myopia management – part 1

In the first of this two-part discussion of attitudes toward myopia and its management, Zoe Bull, Caroline Gaskin and Elizabeth Lumb examine the understanding and opinions of parents

The prevalence of myopia is increasing in all regions of the world.1 Myopia not only impacts vision, but also increases the risk of sight-threatening diseases, such as retinal detachment, cataract, and myopic maculopathy.2 In response to this global public health issue, which is already at a prevalence of approximately 50% in some regions,1 several expert bodies have provided guidelines and other materials to assist the management of myopia in clinical practice.

Given the importance of communication between parents and ECPs, an awareness of the understanding and attitudes of these parties may prove helpful. In this two-part review, we look at the current knowledge, understanding and opinions held by primary caregivers and ECPs about myopia and its management with part 1 exploring parental awareness and beliefs.
