The optometric consul-tation is unique in the medical milieu. To fully understand it we need to consider not just the physical processes but the psychological ones as well.
The traditional model sees the examination falling into three distinct and separate stages - history and symptoms, physical examination and the patient disposal (Figure 1). This is a very doctor-centred approach. It is something we do and something the patient has done to them. Although an eye examination falls naturally into these three phases we need to look at them as a part of the whole patient experience. It is worth remembering that from the patient's point of view the experience starts with booking the appointment and ends when they return home it is not simply the half hour spent in the consulting room.
