Waterford is the home of a Bausch+Lomb's major research, manufacturing and distribution plant, occupying an area of over 300,000sq ft. Contact lens production started in 1980 and the site is now the biggest manufacturing plant in the B+L organisation. Around 95 per cent of the site is devoted to contact lens production while a much smaller area is reserved for the B+L Pharma division for the production of the Retisert, an intravitreal implant for the treatment of chronic non-infectious posterior uveitis.

The company is one of the largest employers in the south east of Ireland, employing around 1,200 people and despite troubled times for the national economy, such stability has been welcomed at a local level. Staff are quick to speak positively of their employer.
