Pioneering spirit at the BCLA

The BCLA celebrated its 30th anniversary with a free half-day conference on the latest examination techniques in contact lens and anterior eye practice

ecording and measuring the anterior segment was the theme for the fourth BCLA Pioneers' Conference, held in London in late November. More than 200 BCLA members gathered at the Royal Society of Medicine to hear about the latest techniques in corneal examination, including pachymetry, ocular photography, corneal topography and aberrometry.

The conference opened with two presentations with a historical perspective. To mark 30 years since the association was first incorporated, contact lens historians Andrew Gasson and Tim Bowden provided a decade-by-decade account of advances in contact lenses in parallel with developments at the BCLA (see page 20). Nigel Burnett Hodd and Richard Pearson presented an old ciné film and videotape, rescued from oblivion and transferred to digital format so that two pioneers of contact lens practice could be seen demonstrating their fitting skills.
