Q&A: Georgia Hobson, Eye Contact Opticians

Georgia Hobson, Eye Contact Opticians, senior
dispensing associate talks to Optician about the role of the optical assistant and effective teamwork

Why is the optical assistant a vital role?

Georgia Hobson: Within this role you are a key link between client and optom. As a senior dispensing associate I’m the face of the business. It’s so pivotal with regards to customer service to make the right recommendation first time. When an optician and a dispenser work together and there’s a synchronisation, the results are much better for the client. An optometrist can give a perfect refraction, however, it’s up to the dispenser to make a sound recommendation and dispense.

Optics is a very innovative field, therefore troubleshooting for technical nuances and limitations in lens options, while keeping up to date with lens innovation from suppliers, requires a lot of time and technical understanding. I’m constantly updating our lens catalogue and informing colleagues of the alterations.
