Research on transforming lives with contact lenses

Do we place too much emphasis on the way our patients see with their vision correction and not enough on how they feel? Alison Ewbank reports on new research into how the benefits of contact lenses are perceived

From everyday experiences, eye care practitioners know that contact lenses (CLs) can have life-changing effects on their patients. Yet there is surprisingly little research that demonstrates the specific benefits of CL wear.

While there are many reports in the literature on children’s self-confidence, self-esteem, social acceptance and quality of life with CLs, the benefits to adult wearers tend to be viewed more as a given. Even if practitioners acknowledge the value of CLs, they may still be reluctant – for whatever reason – to discuss them with all their patients.

To explore the potential for vision correction to transform people’s lives, Optician joined forces with CooperVision to conduct major surveys among practitioners and among consumers with CL-wearing experience. The aim was to discover perceptions of each to the advantages of CLs and how these are communicated in practice.
