In the meantime, though, a sea change has occurred on the high street, with the arrival of multiples able to seemingly drum up custom at the drop of a hat.
More recently, this has demanded a re-think at the firm, spearheaded by chief executive Ryan Leighton.
However, Leighton does not intend to directly compete with the buying power and marketing clout larger corporations have at their disposal.
Instead, he wants to double Leightons' presence with traditional independent values, such as the family, quality product and clinical care, at the forefront. A recent illness has not held back Leighton's ambitions either, he tells Optician at the company's Farnham head offices.
