SELECTIVE LASER trabeculoplasty (SLT) is a relatively new treatment modality for lowering intraocular pressure (IOP). SLT selectively targets melanin-laden pigmented cells of the trabecular meshwork. Non-pigmented cells and connective tissues are believed to be unaffected. It is a safe alternative to argon laser trabeculoplasty, and studies have also shown that SLT provides effective reduction in IOP in eyes that have previously undergone argon laser trabeculoplasty (ALT) treatment. SLT provides good intraocular control without the patient compliance required to administer anti-glaucoma drops. One of the greatest roadblocks to successful glaucoma treatment is compliance with medical therapy, which can be overcome by SLT.
