Short story: No grounds for appeal (part 2)

In the second short story by David Donner, a cricketer is suspected of murder, but his eyesight needs checking

WEB-oscarOscar was in his consulting room at 9am, contemplating his rather blank appointment diary when the phone rang. ‘DI Stott on the line,’ the receptionist called out. ‘He said he’s arrested the England cricket captain.’

Oscar assumed it was some kind of joke. He answered Stott with: ‘You’ve arrested Alastair Cook? It was a bad shot at the Oval but …’ Stott interrupted him with an exasperated groan: ‘It’s the captain of the blind cricket team, Oscar,’ he replied. ‘And I’d like you to test him to find out what his vision’s like. When can you come?’
