Sight Care Conference report: Opticians behaving differently

People, purpose and passion were the key words at this year’s Sight Care Conference, but behaviour also played a major role. Chris Bennett reports

‘It feels good out there at the moment,’ Gavin Rebello, chairman of Sight Care, told delegates in Birmingham earlier this week at its annual conference, and the audience certainly seemed to agree.

Calling green shoots has become a dangerous game. No sooner has spring apparently sprung than it disappears again. Caution has become a national trait but Rebello’s positive prognosis appears accurate.

‘In Essex we have an unusual key performance indicator. In 2008 there were hardly any white van men around or if they were around they weren’t in a rush. On Friday I nearly got knocked down twice. It’s busy out there. There are lots of people wanting to buy right now but it’s easy to get sucked into that.’
