Smoke signals

The smoking ban presents a number of major hurdles for businesses to straddle, and many still have concerns about aspects of the ban - despite official government guidance. In an attempt to clear the air, Kelly Mansfield, editor of Workplace Law Magazine, explores these concerns and looks at how they were tackled in Scotland

Whether these facts and figures are realistic remains to be seen, but the one area over which there is no doubt is that in only a few short weeks being smoke-free will no longer be a choice, but a legal obligation. It is now up to businesses and employers to prepare for the ban, which, in some cases, is easier said then done.

Official government guidance has been sent to all business ahead of the ban. While the guidance is entitled Everything you need to prepare for the new smoke-free law on 1 July 2007, some employers have little faith in its usefulness. It seems the whole issue of the ban is a confusing subject, and one that employers still need expert clarification on - despite having read the government's guidance.
