The Dutch became proponents of Total Football in the 1970s, under its ethos players fill in for one another as the need arises resulting in dynamic, exciting and flexible play. Simon Simmonds, director of the winning practice, says that ethos was central to Specsavers Teignmouth success. ‘It is very much being there, and leading from the front. As director of the business and an optometrist too, in order to achieve high performance I believe you have to be there driving the business so the staff get behind you to deliver excellence.’ On a human level that means being friendly and putting out a can-do attitude. ‘Service with a smile goes along way,’ he says.
