The aftercare essentials

In advance of an interactive exercise looking at aftercare frequency, Andrew Franklin reminds us of the essential components of a contact lens aftercare appointment

The purpose of aftercare is to ensure the continued wellbeing of the patient and in this the practitioner has both reactive and proactive roles. The reactive element involves gathering information from conversing with the patient and clinical observation of the lenses and eyes, then initiating appropriate management strategies. The proactive element is the encouragement of compliance with lens care that would otherwise deteriorate over time. This second goal is often pursued rather less assiduously than the first, yet it may have a profound influence on the outcome of contact lens wear. To put it another way, prevention is better than cure.
