Worldwide, around one-fifth of new wearers are fitted with DDs, although wearer numbers and prescribing rates vary greatly across countries. However, despite recent developments in CL materials and designs, numerous studies still report dryness and discomfort-related symptoms. Around half of CL wearers suffer with dryness symptoms, which tend to increase during the day's wear. This can lead to reduced wearing times, dissatisfaction and, ultimately, discontinuation. Soft lens manufacturers have attempted a range of product improvements to improve lens performance - particularly comfort - with some recently introduced DD lenses incorporating components in their materials aimed at maintaining comfort for longer.
