The term 'core competencies' is described on the GOC website as 'the knowledge and skills an optometrist or dispensing optician must possess, in order to register with the GOC and practise in the UK'.1 They have also formed the framework for the College of Optometrists Scheme for Registration since its introduction in 2004.
