Ten years ago the site of one of the world's most modern prescription labs was a drive-in movie park. Chris Bennett travelled to Maui Jim in the US for a closer look

That space now plays home to one of the most modern surfacing labs on the planet. Maui Jim's plano sunglass product is manufactured in Japan and Italy by long-term partner manufacturers using its proprietary colour enhancing Polarizedplus2 lenses and frame designs. By value about a quarter of its product is prescription glazed and Peoria is the worldwide centre for that side of the business.

'We built this lab and moved in March 2007,' says Paul Ponder, manager Rx lab, 'but it's been totally transformed since then.' The lab does no conventional surfacing whatsoever, all of the polycarbonate and high index (1.6) lens jobs are freeform generated using six machines along two parallel production lines.
