Chris Bennett: How well do optical professionals understand the internet? I will choose Gordon to speak first, as his practice won the Optician Independent Practice Website of the Year Award. Gordon, do you feel the UK optical industry fully understands the internet and uses it to its advantage?

Gordon Ilett: They are reaching that point, slowly. In recent years, opticians are seeing certain internet traders as a threat to their business and are starting to respond. With readily available products, like contact lenses, where you do not need a physical experience - you don't need to see them on your face - you can obtain the product details and make a purchase easily, which is what many patients are doing.
