The MPS II (Figure 1) is an update of the MPOD, which uses the technique of heterochromatic flicker technology (HFT).1 However, although the hardware remains the same, the software has two notable differences. Firstly, since it entered the market over four years ago, it has amassed a large 'normative database' of 1.5 million patients. This has resulted in only a single central measurement being required in the majority of patients to determine your macular pigment (MP), as the actual MP (central and peripheral measurements) compares favorably with central measurement only when giving the age estimate.2 Secondly, the graph recorded as the blue/green ratio changes to measure the minimum is now analysed by a 'Data Quality' algorithm (DQI) which records the data as green (data acceptable), orange (data caution - multiple minima and maxima), or red (data unsafe - flat response).
