There was a time when ocular pathology was the term used to describe the study of diseases of the eye. The changing role of optometrists has widened their interests from identifying and referring eye conditions, to managing them or avoiding them altogether.

A growing emphasis on health rather than disease and a more holistic approach to wellbeing, highlights the importance of a healthy lifestyle.

Eye care may now be the generic term for what ‘eye care professionals’ engage in, but eye health suggests a wider spectrum of health-related issues that affect the eyes.

This year’s National Eye Health Week (21-27 September) took lifestyle and eye health as its theme, promoting ‘simple tips to help keep your eyes and vision healthy’.
