Since 1996, we have collected information about 28,498 contact lens fits in the United Kingdom. Veys and Sulley reported that about 800,000 ‘new contact lens wearers’ (presumably from contact lens fits) entered the market in 2016.1 If this number is assumed to have remained about the same over the full period of this survey, we have received prospective information about 0.1% of all UK contact lens fits in recent decades.
Why collect such information? The intent of receiving, processing and sharing this information is that it allows optometrist and contact lens optician colleagues to benchmark their prescribing habits and, in addition, provides instructional information to industry, educators and others. We have provided a summary of our findings in Optician2-29 every year since the inception of this work.
