Ocular therapeutics round-up
As optometrists in most US states hold prescribing rights, it was not surprising that lectures on ocular therapeutics featured heavily. And one resounding themes this year was dry eye and its management. Dry eye syndrome is a common multifactorial disease affecting millions of people worldwide. Studies have indicated that it affects between 11 to 17 per cent of the population, with a higher prevalence in women than men. Risk factors, or triggers, include environmental factors - such as air pollution (cigarette smoke), low humidity, heating, air conditioning and lack of sleep - and iatrogenic factors such as medication, systemic disease and meibomian gland disease.
